Storm Damage Roof Repair in Virginia Beach, VA
Wind, Hail, or Storm Damage to Your Roof?
Shingles in the yard, a limb on the roof, a new stain on the ceiling after a nor’easter: storm damage isn’t always obvious, and it isn’t always as bad as it looks. Reitzel Exteriors has handled storm damage roof repair in Virginia Beach since 2004. We’ll inspect the roof, show you what the storm actually did, and explain whether a repair will take care of it.
What Should You Do After a Storm Damages Your Roof?
Once the storm has passed and it’s safe to go outside:
Noticed roof damage after a storm?
Contact Reitzel Exteriors to discuss the situation and available inspection options.
Stay clear of downed power lines and anything that looks unstable, like hanging limbs or a sagging gutter. Report downed lines to your utility.
Stay off the roof and off ladders. Wet, damaged shingles are slippery, and hidden damage can make footing unsafe.
Walk the property and look up from the ground. Binoculars help you see shingle edges, the ridge, and flashing.
Photograph everything you can see: shingles in the yard, damage on the roof, dented gutters, stains inside. Keep the dates.
Protect what’s inside if water is coming in, but only if it’s safe: move belongings and catch drips.
Call a roofer to assess the damage.
Contact your insurance company if the damage looks significant, and follow their process for reporting it.
Signs Your Roof May Have Storm Damage
01
Missing shingles, or pieces scattered in the yard
02
Shingles that are lifted, flapping, or creased across the top
03
Dark patches where underlayment or decking is exposed
04
Bent, loose, or missing flashing and vent caps
05
Branches on the roof, or broken limbs hanging over it
06
Dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, or the AC unit’s fins
07
New ceiling or wall stains after the storm
08
Granules collecting at the bottom of downspouts
Some damage is easy to see from the ground. Some isn’t, like a broken seal under a shingle that’s lying flat. The opposite is true too: not every streak or dark spot is storm damage. Algae streaks, old blistering, and normal wear can look alarming without affecting how the roof performs.
An inspection sorts out which is which.
Wind Damage to Roofs in Virginia Beach
Here, wind is usually a bigger threat to roofs than hail. Nor’easters and tropical systems bring sustained wind and strong gusts that work at the edges of every shingle.
Asphalt shingles are held down by nails and a strip of sealant that bonds each shingle to the one below it. A strong gust can break that seal and lift the shingle, sometimes folding it back hard enough to leave a crease. A creased shingle may settle flat again and look fine from the ground, but it’s no longer bonded, so the next storm can tear it off. Wind also hits roof edges, ridges, and hips hardest, can loosen flashing, and drives rain sideways under shingles. That’s why wind damage often doesn’t leak right away.
A few lifted or missing shingles on a sound roof are usually a straightforward repair. When seals have broken across much of a slope, it gets harder to repair the slope well, and we’ll tell you if that’s the case.
Hail Damage to Residential Roofs
Hail is less common here than wind damage, but summer thunderstorms do bring it. On asphalt shingles, hail damage can show up as:
- Dark spots where impacts knocked granules loose and exposed the layer underneath
- Soft, bruised spots that give slightly when pressed during an inspection
- Cracked or split shingles
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, and other metal
Hail evidence takes careful reading. Granule loss also comes with age, and dents on a gutter show that hail fell, not that it damaged the shingles. Small hail often leaves no damage that affects how the roof performs. We’ll tell you what we see and whether it actually matters.
Roof Damage From Fallen Branches and Debris
A falling limb can do anything from scuffing a few shingles to cracking the decking or bending a gutter off the fascia. Windblown debris can tear shingles and knock vent caps and flashing loose. The severity decides the fix. A few broken shingles is a simple repair. A puncture through the decking means opening the area, replacing the damaged wood, and rebuilding the layers above it.
Please don’t try to pull a heavy branch off the roof yourself. If it’s large or tangled in power lines, call a tree service or your utility first, then call us to assess the roof.
How We Assess Storm-Damaged Roofs
1
Talk through the storm.
when it hit and what you’ve noticed inside and out.
2
Check the accessible parts of the roof
shingles, edges, ridges, valleys, flashing, vents, and pipe boots, plus gutters and any interior stains.
3
Identify signs of storm damage
and separate them from age and normal wear.
4
Judge whether the damage is localized
or spread across the roof.
5
Explain what we found
and your repair options.
6
Talk through next steps
and scheduling.
No inspection can promise to find every hidden problem under intact shingles, but it will give you a clear picture of what the storm did.
Can a Storm-Damaged Roof Be Repaired?
Often, yes. The answer depends on how much of the roof was damaged and where, the roof’s age and condition, what’s underneath, and whether matching shingles are still available.
When Repairs May Be Appropriate
- The damage is limited to a few shingles, one slope, or one flashing detail
- The surrounding shingles are still flexible and sealing
- The decking underneath is solid
- Compatible replacement shingles are available
When Replacement May Be Worth Considering
- Seals are broken or shingles are creased across large areas
- Widespread hail damage on a roof that was already aging
- Decking damage in several places
- The shingle is discontinued, so new pieces won't match or won't seal well to the older material
Even then, it’s your decision, and we’ll show you what’s driving the recommendation. For more on smaller fixes, see roof repair. If the damage points the other way, here’s how roof replacement works.
What Affects the Cost of Storm Damage Roof Repair?
Storm damage roof repair cost comes down to what the storm actually did:
How much of the roof is damaged
Roofing material
Access and pitch
Flashing and vent damage
Decking damage
Debris removal
Complexity
Temporary protection
We don’t price storm work until we’ve seen it. Whether insurance pays for any of it depends on your policy and your insurer, not on us.
Understanding Roof Storm Damage Insurance Claims
A storm damage claim is between you and your insurer. Coverage depends on your policy, the cause of the damage, exclusions, your deductible, and the insurer’s own assessment. A few steps help the process go smoothly:
01
Document the damage with dated photos as soon as it’s safe.
02
Review your policy, including your deductible and any separate wind or hurricane deductible.
03
Contact your insurer to report the damage and ask how they want to proceed.
04
Keep copies of inspection findings, repair estimates, and receipts for any temporary protection.
05
Follow your insurer’s process and any reporting deadlines.
What we can do
inspect the roof, explain what we found, and give you our findings and a repair estimate you can share with your insurer.
What we don't do
decide your coverage, negotiate your claim, act as a public adjuster, or promise what your insurer will pay.
Why Homeowners Choose Reitzel Exteriors After Storm Damage

Clear Repair Recommendations
We separate storm damage from normal wear, show you which is which, and recommend the fix that matches what actually happened.
Understanding the Roofing System
Storms rarely hit just the shingles. We check the edges, flashing, vents, pipe boots, valleys, and gutters, because damage to any of them can let water in later.

Storm Damage Roof Repair FAQs
How can I tell if my roof was damaged by a storm?
Start from the ground: look for missing or lifted shingles, bent flashing or vents, debris on the roof, and dented gutters. Check the ceilings and attic for new stains. Some damage, like broken seal strips, can’t be seen from below, so an inspection is the only way to know for sure.
What does wind damage to roof shingles look like?
Missing shingles are the obvious sign. Less obvious are shingles that lifted and dropped back down, often leaving a horizontal crease near the top where they bent. Wind also tends to damage the edges, ridge, and hips of a roof first, and it can loosen flashing and vent caps.
What are common signs of hail damage on a roof?
Dark spots where granules were knocked off, cracked shingles, soft bruised spots, and dents in gutters, downspouts, and metal vents. Dents on metal show that hail fell, not necessarily that the shingles were damaged. Small hail often causes no real damage, so the evidence needs careful interpretation.
Should I have my roof inspected after a severe storm?
If you can see damage from the ground, find debris on the roof, or notice a new stain, yes. It’s worth considering after a major wind event even if nothing looks wrong, since lifted shingles can look normal from below. Photograph what you see before anyone touches it.
Can missing shingles be repaired without replacing the roof?
In most cases, yes, as long as the damage is limited and the shingles around it still lie flat and seal. A few missing tabs on a sound roof is a routine repair. A slope full of lifted or brittle shingles, or a discontinued shingle that can’t be matched, changes the answer.
How much does storm damage roof repair cost?
It depends on how much of the roof was damaged, the roofing material, access, and whether flashing, decking, or debris removal is involved. Replacing a handful of shingles costs far less than repairing a limb strike through the decking. You’ll get a scope and price after the inspection.
Does homeowners insurance cover roof storm damage?
It depends on your policy. Many policies cover sudden storm damage like wind or hail, subject to deductibles, exclusions, and the insurer’s assessment, while normal wear and age usually aren’t covered. Your insurer makes that call, so review your policy and ask them directly.
Should I call a roofer or my insurance company first?
Many homeowners contact both within a day or two. A roofer can tell you whether there’s actually storm damage and what it would take to fix, which helps you decide whether a claim makes sense. Your insurer can explain your coverage and reporting requirements. Check your policy for any notification deadlines.
Can storm damage cause roof leaks weeks later?
Yes. A shingle with a broken seal or a crease can stay in place and keep out normal rain, then let water in during the next wind-driven storm. Loosened flashing works the same way. If water is already coming in, see our roof leak repair page.
