Exterior Home Services for Suffolk Homeowners

Every part of your home’s exterior has a job. The roof and siding keep rain out, gutters move it away, trim seals the gaps, and windows hold the weather back without blocking the light. Decks and fences give you usable, private outdoor space. Keep them in good shape and they protect each other.

Roof Repair and Roof Replacement

Common Suffolk roofing problems include torn or missing shingles, flashing that’s lifted at a chimney or wall, and leaks that show up as ceiling stains. Whether you need roof repair or roof replacement depends on the roof’s age, how much of it is damaged, and the condition of the decking underneath. A newer roof with one storm-damaged section is usually a repair. An aging roof with problems in several places usually isn’t.

Siding Repair and Replacement

Siding near the ground takes hits from mowers and splashback, and siding under trees stays damp and grows mildew. Cracked or loose pieces can usually be replaced individually. If panels are warped, brittle, or failing on several walls, new vinyl or fiber cement siding is worth considering.

Window Replacement

Drafts, foggy glass, sticking sashes, and stained sills mean a window is losing its seal or its frame is breaking down. Before window replacement in Suffolk, VA, decide what matters most to you: energy savings, easier cleaning, or a new look. We’ll measure each opening and walk you through the options.

Gutter Repair and Replacement

Gutters under trees fill with leaves and pine needles, then overflow onto the fascia and siding. Cleaning and resealing fixes many problems. Sagging, rusted, or undersized gutters are better replaced so water actually reaches the downspouts and moves away from your house.

Fascia, Soffit, and Trim Repair

Rotting fascia, soffits, or window trim is almost always a water problem first. Replacing the soft wood without fixing the source, like a gutter overflow or a leak at the roof edge, just means doing it again. We’ll find the cause, then repair or replace the damaged trim.

Deck Repair and New Decks

Larger yards often mean larger decks, with more boards and posts to wear out. Look for soft spots, loose railings, and rusted connectors. Solid framing can usually take new boards. If the structure is failing, we can work as your deck builders in Suffolk, VA and plan a replacement around how you use the space.

Fence Repair and Installation

On a big lot, a fence is a long run to maintain. Leaning sections usually mean rotted posts, and gates tend to sag first. If the rest is solid, repair the bad posts and panels. For new fence installation in Suffolk, VA, we’ll help you plan the layout and choose a material that fits your property and how much upkeep you want.

Why Suffolk Homeowners Choose Reitzel Exteriors

Local Experience Since 2004

Marc Reitzel grew up in Virginia Beach and founded the company with his wife, Courtney, in 2004. Suffolk is one of our primary service areas, and we work on the full range of homes here, from older houses near downtown to newer subdivisions.

Straightforward Repair and Replacement Recommendations

You should understand your options before you spend money. As a roofing company that also handles siding, windows, and trim, we’ll explain what we found, what’s causing it, and whether a repair will hold. If two options make sense, you’ll hear about both.

Respect for Your Home and Property

Before work begins, we protect your landscaping and the sides of your home. Debris goes into trailers instead of a large roll-off dumpster, and nails are swept up every day.

Multiple Exterior Services

If the roof is going, it’s often the right time to look at the gutters and fascia too. With one company handling all of it, you get one inspection, one schedule, and work done in the right order.

How Suffolk Weather Can Affect Your Home's Exterior

Suffolk is Virginia’s largest city by land area, so conditions vary between a wooded lot, an open rural property, and a home near the Nansemond River.

Heavy Rain and Roof Leaks.

Hard rain tests flashing at chimneys, walls, and vents first. If a stain appears after a storm, note where it is and whether it grows. That helps pinpoint the source.

Humidity and Exterior Wood.

Shaded lots keep fascia, soffits, and deck boards damp for days after rain. Keep branches trimmed back from the roof, and repaint or seal exposed wood before it starts to peel.

Wind and Storm Damage.

Open lots catch more wind, and wooded ones catch falling limbs. After a storm, check from the ground for missing shingles, dents from branches, and loose siding or gutters.

Drainage, Gutters, and Exterior Protection.

Clean gutters at least twice a year, and more often under trees. Make sure downspouts empty well away from the foundation and that the soil slopes away from the house.

None of this means your home is in trouble. It does mean a few habits pay off: look things over after major storms, choose materials and fasteners suited to your home’s exposure, and fix small problems before moisture has time to spread. If you’re unsure what you’re looking at, we’re glad to take a look.

Common Questions About Exterior Home Projects in Suffolk

How do I know whether my Suffolk roof needs repair or replacement?

Three things decide it: how old the roof is, how much of it is damaged, and what shape the decking and flashing underneath are in. Storm damage on a 10-year-old roof is usually repairable. A roof near the end of its life with widespread wear, or decking that’s soft in several places, is usually a replacement.

Missing, curled, or cracked shingles; granules collecting in the gutters; bare spots; a sagging roofline; damp insulation or daylight in the attic; and ceiling stains. One sign isn’t a reason to panic, but it is a good reason to have experienced roofers in Suffolk take a look before it spreads.

Usually, yes. Most leaks come from one spot: a flashing joint, a cracked pipe boot (the rubber seal around a plumbing vent), or a few damaged shingles. If the rest of the roof is sound, fixing that spot is the sensible choice. Replacement makes sense when leaks keep returning in different places or the roof is near the end of its life.

When you notice drafts, fogged glass, sashes that won’t stay open, or rotting frames and sills. Timing matters too: if you’re replacing siding, doing the windows at the same time makes the trim and flashing work simpler. If only a few windows are failing, you can replace those first.

Water that doesn’t dry out. Common sources are overflowing gutters, leaks at the roof edge, failed caulk around windows, and paint cracked enough to let water in. Shade and humidity slow the drying. Fixing the source matters as much as replacing the wood, or the rot comes back.

If the joists, beams, and posts are solid and the deck is properly attached to the house, replacing worn boards and railings is usually enough. If the framing is soft, the ledger board (where the deck connects to the house) is rotting, or posts are failing, replacement is the safer choice. A structural check comes first.

Confirm your property lines and any HOA or city rules on height and placement before you pick a style. Think about what the fence needs to do (privacy, pets, kids), how much upkeep you want, and how it will handle wind on an open lot. Underground utilities should be marked through VA811 before any posts go in.
