Even if you have a brand new roof, or you get your roof taken care of on a regular basis, there is always the chance that your roof will leak during highly severe weather.
We have been serving the Virginia Beach area for decades here at Reitzel Roofing & Exteriors, and we are very much aware of the crazy weather conditions that take place.
It is pretty common for homes in Virginia to only leak during severe weather, such as hurricanes or nor-easters, but be completely fine soon after the storm passes.
In this blog, you will learn why your roof only leaks sometimes, and what you should do about it.
Here at Reitzel Roofing & Exteriors, we provide top-notch roofing services for our community, and we will come check out your roof and evaluate damages for free.
If your roof leaking is major and causing a lot of damage, please call us right away at (757) 513-7053 and we will help you quickly.
Now, if your current roof condition isn’t in need of emergency attention, keep on reading.
During nor’easters and hurricanes, horizontal rain often happens, and unfortunately, roofs are usually only made to prevent damage from vertical rain (even if it is really heavy).
Horizontal rain caused by extreme winds can much more easily get in between shingles, causing leaks that typically only last during the storm, but it is not totally uncommon for it to continue leaking after the storm ends.
However, it is important to keep an eye on these leaks from horizontal rain because these leaks will just cause more damage over time, and will then be more expensive to get repaired.
As for regular thunderstorms that have normal (not horizontal) rain, if your roof is leaking as a result of those, that is a tell-tale sign that your roof is either outdated or was initially installed poorly.
A lot of the time with these leaks, it’s that your shingles are broken and are allowing rain to soak through, or your gutters are too clogged to hold enough rain.
Very small leaks during storms are normal, but major leaks during storms are not normal and should get inspected immediately.
Now that you know why your roof only leaks sometimes, it is best to play it safe and call a trusted roofing contractor to assess your roof and see if any maintenance needs to be done.
If you ignore your roof leaks for too long, your home could become extremely dangerous for you and your family to live in.
If you are in the Virginia Beach area, then consider reaching out to us here at Reitzel Roofing & Exteriors.
